Man and Van Dulwich Health and Safety Policy

This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Man and Van Dulwich manages health, safety and welfare in relation to our removal and transport services. Our aim is to provide a safe working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public while we carry out house moves, office moves and related collection and delivery services.

We are committed to preventing accidents, work-related ill health and damage to property by identifying risks in our day-to-day removal activities and putting in place clear, practical control measures. This policy applies to all staff and all work undertaken on behalf of Man and Van Dulwich, whether at customers premises, in transit or at any storage or loading location.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

The management of Man and Van Dulwich has overall responsibility for ensuring that effective health and safety arrangements are in place and are regularly reviewed. Managers are responsible for implementing this policy, planning safe working methods, providing appropriate equipment and monitoring performance.

All employees, including drivers, porters and office staff, have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards, incidents or near misses, and cooperate fully with any training or investigation.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

We carry out risk assessments for typical removal activities such as lifting and carrying items, loading and unloading vehicles, securing loads, operating trolleys and working in and around customer premises. Where necessary, activity-specific safe systems of work are developed to address identified risks.

Before each job, our team considers access routes, parking arrangements, stairs, lifts, uneven surfaces, weather conditions and any unusual items or obstacles. Where new risks are identified on site, staff are required to stop and reassess the task, and if necessary seek guidance from a manager before proceeding.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a core part of our removal work and is managed carefully to reduce the risk of injury. Staff receive guidance on correct lifting techniques, team lifting, use of handling aids and the importance of working within personal capability. Where possible we use equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, straps or ramps to minimise strain.

Heavy, bulky or awkward items are assessed individually. Team members are encouraged to speak up if an item is too heavy or unsafe to move and to request additional staff or specialised equipment. Improvised or unsafe lifting methods are not permitted. Equipment is checked regularly for damage or wear and is removed from use if found to be defective.

Vehicle Safety and Load Securing

Our vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy condition and used in line with applicable road traffic and transport safety requirements. Drivers must carry out basic pre-use checks and report any defects or concerns immediately so that prompt action can be taken.

Loads are arranged to prevent movement during transit, using appropriate securing methods such as straps, blankets and other restraints. Heavy items are placed low and evenly distributed to maintain vehicle stability. Staff are trained not to overload vehicles and to respect the vehicle weight limits. Doors and tailgates must be secured before departure.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where necessary for the task and environment, we provide suitable personal protective equipment such as gloves, high visibility vests or safety footwear. Staff are required to use this equipment correctly whenever it has been specified as part of the job and to keep it in good condition. Damaged or missing equipment must be reported so that replacements can be arranged.

Customer Premises and Public Safety

We take reasonable steps to protect customers and members of the public while carrying out removal work. This includes keeping access routes as clear as possible, stacking items safely, avoiding trip hazards and, where practical, using warning signs or verbal warnings when moving large items through shared spaces.

We treat customer premises with respect, taking care to avoid damage to fixtures, fittings and floor surfaces. Equipment such as blankets and floor protection may be used to reduce the chance of damage or slips. Where a task cannot be carried out safely in the way originally requested, we will discuss alternatives with the customer.

Training, Communication and Supervision

Man and Van Dulwich provides ongoing instruction and guidance to ensure that staff understand their responsibilities and are competent to carry out their work safely. This includes induction for new employees, task-specific training, toolbox talks and refreshers as necessary.

Supervisors and senior staff are expected to set a good example and to challenge unsafe behaviour. All members of the team are encouraged to raise health and safety concerns without fear of criticism, and suggestions for improving safety are welcomed.

Incident Reporting and Review

All accidents, injuries, near misses and damage to property that occur in the course of our work must be reported to management as soon as practicable. Incidents are recorded and, where appropriate, investigated to identify underlying causes and to determine what corrective or preventive actions are required.

Findings from incident investigations, customer feedback and staff suggestions are reviewed periodically to improve our procedures. This may result in changes to risk assessments, methods of work, training content or equipment selection.

Wellbeing and Fitness for Work

Our work can be physically demanding, and we recognise the importance of staff wellbeing. Team members are encouraged to take appropriate rest breaks, stay hydrated, and use correct techniques rather than rushing or overexerting themselves. Staff must not work under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances, and prescribed medication that may affect fitness to drive or perform manual handling must be declared to management.

Policy Review

This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains suitable for the size and nature of Man and Van Dulwich and the services we provide. Revisions may be made in response to changes in our activities, feedback from staff or customers, or updates to relevant health and safety guidance. The latest version of this policy is made available to all employees and is communicated as part of our ongoing commitment to safe, reliable removal services.
